"Do non-R&D intensive industries benefit of spillovers from public research? The case of the Agro-food industry

    Get PDF
The agro-food industry is a sector in which the percentage of firms which have done innovation in the past three years is high, whereas they have a low research capacity. According to an innovation survey (1986-90) in France, 70% of agro-food firms which responded in the Community Innovation Survey (CIS), reported innovations while less than 5% of them had internal research capacities. Our paper models estimates of determinants of innovation in the agro-food industry. Based on the comparison of several French databases (annual survey on firms, on innovation, on R&D in firms, on R&D in academic labs), it explores the determinants of innovation: sources of innovation (as defined in CIS), spillovers from public research and spillovers from other firms. Since agro-food firms have a low absorptive capacity, we assume that the transfer of knowledge from public research or from large firms to agro-food firms is based on geographical proximity. The paper presents three main results: 1. Intensity of innovation (defined as radical innovation versus incremental innovation) is linked with the presence of public research in life science in the same region. 2. Spillovers form academic laboratories do exist even if firms have no absorptive capacity.

The Carrers of Social Science Doctoral Graduates in France: the Influence of How the Research was Carried Out

The variables determining the attractiveness of social science PhDs remain unknown. A study on the job position of PhD graduates in the social sciences in Grenoble (1984-1996) was carried out to gain insight into the relationship between the research environment during the PhD (funding and time available for the research, i.e. full-time versus part-time), the quality of research (estimated by distinctions and publications) and PhD students' initial training. The conditions in which the doctoral research is carried out have a crucial influence on the job position the graduate is subsequently able to find. PhD graduates are thus locked into trajectories they may not have chosen because of the lack of information needed to make rational decisions. Empirical analysis helps to improve PhD training. Keywords: PhD graduates, professional trajectories, job position, higher education, university, social sciences.

THEDRE: A Traceable Process for High Quality in Human Centred Computer Science Research

Computer scientists in information system encounter difficulties in leading research when they must consider human aspects, especially to evaluate these aspects. To achieve high quality research, they need to be guided in their process from their research question to their contributions. This article addresses the question of a traceable process to lead research in human-centred computer science. It proposes, THEDRE, a method to lead research with process and some quality indicators. This method integrates the elements to track research thanks to the integration of continuous quality improvement concepts (Deming’s wheel and indicators) in the research process. Our proposal has been designed from our participation in 29 works in human-centred computer science, and more particularly with 8 PHD students in information system. Also, THEDRE has been experimented during 2 workshops with PhD students and researchers

DOP8_Qpp: Model to pre-process educational data

    No full text
This paper addresses problem of reuse of data to help data anlysis and enhace data quality. The article describes a process to take over data that come from educational context. This process to reuse TEL data contains: major tasks, identified data properties and a set of quality criteria to reach these data properties. The objective of the process is to evaluate if data are reusable to serve learning analytics. This process is integrated in an existing data life cycle DOP8. The model was elaborated from several works with set of data since 2012 and from interviews with data-scientists. Also, we have administrated an on-line survey with data-scientists to evaluate feasibility of our proposal

Evaluation des systèmes mobiles et ubiquitaires: proposition de méthodologie et retours d'expérience

    No full text
International audienceThe evaluation of mobile and/or ubiquitous interactive systems via user testing seems a priori more relevant in the field than in a usability laboratory. However, the results of the literature are contradictory. In this article, we aim at explaining the reasons why, and we propose a methodology that could minimize biases. The experiments described in the literature and our own experiments lead us to define the interactive environment concept and three possible experimental approaches: laboratory, field and reality testing. Then, we propose a methodology and a technique -the Trojan horse- adapted to the evaluation in reality testing. At last, we illustrate the theoretical approach by three experiments and give experience feedbacks on them.

DISCO, a Formal Model of Serious Games to Help Teachers at the Design Stage

    No full text
International audienceThis paper proposes a formal model of serious game understandable and usable by teachers in higher education. Serious games are often mentioned in higher education, but their use is restricted other than for teachers always looking for renewal. Indeed, there is a lack of tools to facilitate their creation and use, especially for teachers. This article presents serious games of the type case study designed empirically. To overcome this empirical aspect, we derive a formal model of serious play and methodology closely associating teachers in the creative process. We want to improve no only the design stage but also the use of serious games produced by teachers with their students. This model, called DISCO, will be the basis of a current work including an experimental approach taking into account the context of the job of teachers

About Composing Our Own Smart Home

EUD4Services (End-User Development for Services) workshop, in Conjunction with AVI 2010, Rome, May 2010This paper reports on an empirical study designed as a follow-up of a theoretical model intended to support reasoning about the composition of smart artifacts by end users. We have solicited 17 families and used a combination of interviews and playful cultural probes. Results show that families are willing to couple smart objects to improve their lives, and that the theoretical questions raised by our model are sound
